Rover and Taxes: What You Need to Know

As a pet sitter or dog walker on Rover, you’re considered to be running your own business through the Rover platform. This means that you’re responsible for reporting your earnings on Rover in your tax filing each year and paying any taxes owed on your earnings.

We know filing taxes can be confusing, and we’re here to provide basic information and resources to help you navigate the process.

Note: Rover can’t offer tax advice. If you have specific questions, need tax advice, or are unsure about your unique situation, we recommend reaching out to a tax professional.

What is DAC7?

DAC7 is a directive from the European Union that went into effect on 1 January 2023. These new rules require online marketplaces, like Rover, to collect and report taxpayer information on marketplace providers who earn income via the marketplace. For Rover, this directive means we are required by the EU to collect additional tax information from you if you are a sitter and resident in a country that is a member of the European Union. We’re also required to report this tax information along with your earnings for the year to the country where you’re a resident.

As a result of DAC7, Rover is responsible for reporting information related to your activity on the Rover.com marketplace. This is an EU-wide requirement that applies to all online marketplaces with EU resident sellers, so you may see similar requests and reporting if you are active on other online marketplaces in the EU.

How does this apply to me?

For 2023, DAC7 will apply to you if you meet all three requirements below:

  • You became a sitter on Rover in 2023.
  • You’re a resident in a country that is a member of the European Union.
  • You completed a booking on Rover in 2023.

Starting in 2024, DAC7 will expand and apply to you if you meet both requirements below:

  • You’re a resident in a country that is a member of the European Union.
  • You completed a booking on Rover during the relevant calendar year

What information is disclosed to my country of residence?

With DAC7, we have to collect and then report the following information to your country of residence:

Information provided by you:

  • Legal name
  • Primary residence address
  • Country you are a resident of (will be assumed to be your primary address country unless you indicate otherwise)
  • Personal tax ID (or Business tax ID if you are operating as a registered business on Rover)
  • Date of birth (not applicable to registered businesses on Rover)
  • VAT number (only applicable if you’re VAT registered and received a number)

Information provided by Rover:

  • Amounts you earned for bookings you completed during each quarter within the calendar year and the number of bookings
  • Any fees withheld from the amount paid to you during each quarter (this includes the service fees charged by Rover)

How do I provide my information to Rover?

You’ll be able to complete your tax information and access your Rover Tax Account from your Payments Dashboard. This information will be used solely to comply with tax and financial reporting obligations and will be encrypted in transit.

Note about character limits when providing your tax information:

Only English letters, numbers, and special characters (& - , \' / # . %) are accepted. If your name, address, or any other tax information contains accented characters, please write the information using English letters that represent the equivalent of an accented character. For example, use a instead of á, o instead of ó, ae instead of ä, or ue instead of ü.

To complete your tax information:
1. Navigate to the Payments Dashboard from your Rover account, then select Provide Tax details.
3. Log in to your tax account using the same email address associated with your Rover account.

4. Enter the temporary password provided in an email from no-reply-dac7@rover.com.  This email will also include a secure “Rover Tax Account login” link that gives you access to the tax questions you need to complete.

5. Login with the provided username and password. You’ll be prompted to create a new password, which is separate from your Rover account login.

6. Once you update your password, complete the questions to provide your tax information.

7. When finished, sign and submit your information. You’ll see an option to return to Rover.com once you’ve submitted your tax information.

Note: If you don’t provide the information requested, Rover will be required to freeze your payouts and may pause your ability to offer services on Rover until you’ve completed your tax information.

Where can I view DAC7 information that Rover is reporting?

Rover will provide you with an electronic statement of the tax information that we submitted to your country of residence by 31 January after the relevant calendar year. You don’t need to take any action when you receive this statement, but it may be a helpful resource when you prepare your tax filing.

As we get closer to the end of the year, we’ll update this article with additional information on how to access your statement.
